The worlds first fully positionable orthopedic X-Ray calibration & marking device. Designed specifically to work with TraumaCad surgical planning software.

OrthoMark now allows the variable of X-Ray magnification factor to be removed from the process of Orthopedic templating by positioning a 1 inch stainless steel ball at a precise anatomical plane. This allows surgical planning software to "calibrate" itself with the ball and ensure a precise measurement of the anatomy in question which, in turn, helps ensure that the appropriate prosthetic device is selected before surgery.

Historically, Orthopedic surgeons have used mylar or other plastic "overlays" in conjunction with standard film X-Rays to determine the appropriate prosthetic to be used in surgery. These overlays were constructed with a "built in" magnification factor designed to be used with standard X-Ray film. With the introduction and rapid implementation of digital imaging (DR {Digital or Direct Radiography} & CR {Computed Radiography}, Many surgeons found that this particular aspect had been all but forgotten. Many facilities were printing Orthopedic X-Rays from their PACS systems and finding that "true sizing" was not always "true sizing" and that their standard overlays were not providing the precise measurements necessary to quickly and effectively plan for surgery.

It took some time for manufacturers of prosthetic devices to supply their digital templates but eventually several companies began to offer them and before long software packages for orthopedic templating became available.

Along with these templating packages came the need to be able to "calibrate" the dimensions of the anatomy of interest. With OrthoMark, we believe that we have achieved the best method all around to date. When we say "best" we mean from the technologist to surgery, we believe this device will function better than any other on the market currently.

Positioning OrthoMark

In the first image you can see OrthoMark positioned at the same plane as the greater trochanter. In some cases the Surgeon might request that OrthoMark be placed in the inner thigh area near the ischial tuberosity. This is also very easy with OrthoMark and causes little, if any, fear of embarrasment for the patient and technologist.

OrthoMark used in hip replacement surgery

In the second image you can see OrthoMark placed on a plane equivalent to midline of the femur or just behind and below the patella.

Knee replacement application of OrthoMark calibration and marking device

In all cases the anatomy is palpated to discern correct placement of OrthoMark.

FAQ

Can the length of the flexible arm be changed?

Yes. It's possible to add or remove sections of the arm. Removal can often be accomplished by bending the arm in the middle and then doing so again for the number of sections you want to remove. Additional sections can be ordered from RSI in groups of four. We also have tools available to assist with the removal and addition of sections.

Why is the device using a ball at the end instead of some other lead rule?

The ball is an exact 25.4 mm (1 inch) and is the exact size from all angles. If the ball is properly situated at bone level, software applications will be able to use the sphere as a calibration marker to “know” what the size of other components at that plane.

Do I have to worry if the OrthoMark calibration tool gets wet?

No. All hardware is made with stainless steel including the ball and the rest is plastic. The flexible arm is actually designed to be a flexible hose for liquids in the tool and dye market.

If the OrthoMark tool is having problems and I don’t want to deal with it, can I send it in for repairs?

Yes. For a flat fee of $50.00 plus shipping costs the unit can be shipped to RSI and refurbished.

What if the OrthoMark tool has a problem during warranty?

You can contact us via email at the address above or call 510-727-0261 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific time. We will provide technical support and repair services as needed.

Can I order a custom sized ball?

Yes, we will be happy to take orders for a custom sized ball. Call or email us for a quote.
