OrthoFlow Improves Surgeon Productivity and Patient Satisfaction at OrthoCarolina

Columbia, MD – February 9, 2009.  Orthocrat, Ltd. announced today that OrthoCarolina, of Charlotte, North Carolina, has successfully implemented its groundbreaking OrthoFlow workflow solution:  “Swipe Card, See Image.”

OrthoFlow is designed to save precious clinical time for busy surgeons who move from exam room to exam room, seeing large volumes of patients each day.  When a surgeon enters a room, he simply swipes his badge over a reader, and the images for that patient are instantly displayed.  When the surgeon leaves, he swipes again, and the computer is locked until the surgeon enters to see his next patient.

“We are one of the largest orthopedic groups in the country with over 70 surgeons in every subspecialty and a well known research and fellowship program,” says Dr. Dan Murrey, CEO of OrthoCarolina.  “We conducted very careful tests to see whether OrthoFlow was just a gimmick or a true improvement in the clinical practice of our busy surgeons, and have enthusiastically adopted its use.”

“I am fanatical about spending every possible moment with my patients,” adds Dr. Roy Majors.  “I put a special premium on efficiency:  every wasted moment is a moment taken away from patient care. Consequently, I am always looking for ways to save a few seconds here and a few seconds there.  OrthoFlow has made me much more efficient, giving me valuable extra time each day that I can devote to patient care.”

Steve Hendrick, CIO, points out: “When the patient is in the room, the computer is safely HIPAA-locked.  From an I.T. support perspective, this has turned out to be a great benefit, because patients can no longer play with our computers before the surgeon enters the exam room. This solution has made the use of our PACS system that much more effortless for our surgeons.”

“We believe that OrthoFlow will be one of those workflow improvements that actually make us more efficient, while improving our clinical practice,” said Dr. Murrey.  “Through an outside agency we monitor patient-satisfaction scores routinely, and we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see numbers climb at those facilities where OrthoFlow is deployed. We believe this is because our surgeons now get to spend extra time with their patients. We are looking forward to implementing OrthoFlow at all of our facilities over the coming months.”
